The neighborhood around Andreas Schelfhoutstraat used to be known as the Overtoomse Veld. Originally an agricultural area with meadows and fields, it began to develop into a residential neighborhood in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The first homes were built around 1890. At this time, the neighborhood consisted mainly of small working-class houses occupied by working families.
